Cannon became a great friend, he was a "lovable" cat.
He talked me into moving to NYC.
He passed away before I got to NY, but his band (Bookie, Nat,) were there to help me.
I spent a million nights at "Boogie Woggie".

I've been visiting this great site for several years now, and continue to use it as a reference for discography.  I heard Cannonball the first time on "Black Messiah", then "Accent on Africa".  I then went backwards and forwards, checking out most of his body of work.  He continues to inspire and delight!

In 1971, I opened for Cannon and his band in Denver Colorado at a place called Marvelous Marvs. I was a young singer/songwriter/guitarist from New York touring to promote my first record - 'A Picture' by Allan Thomas on Sire Records. Cannon, Nat and the band took a liking to me and we became friends. Later Julian invited me to sing improvisational vocals with him and the quintet at the recording of the 'Soul Of The Bible' sessions. He also invited me to sing improvisational vocals at the Troubadour and Lighthouse clubs in L.A. The song that I sang and that we created on the spot is called 'Behold' and as I was on contract to Sire Records at the time, Cannon and Nat elected to give me a pseudonym -Arthur Charma. My real name is Allan Thomas and I am releasing my fourth album of original tunes next week.
Cannonball touched me deeply, and gave me confidence to do things I didn\'t even know I had in me to do. My love and respect for him floourishes as much today as it did then.
Thanks for keeping the Cannonball flame alive.

I love this sight! Adderley has been, since i can remember, my favorite and most influential jazz saxophonist.  This sight really gave me some insight into Adderley's world.  I enjoy reading through his solos and recognizing patterns that may be useful when it comes time for me to improv.  Definitely a great site

As a young tenor saxophonist growing up musically in philadelphia i had the opportunity to meet Cannonball out on the street, returning to the club after a break on his gig, along with his brother Nat and Yuseff Lateef. they were playing at the old showboat lounge in town and a trombonist friend and i were on our way to our 2nd jazz gig ever not too far away. Cannonball was so friendly and encouraging and even offered to sneak us into the club but we\'d have to stand in a broom closet because we were too young to be in the club at 15 and 16 yrs old at night. my friend and i were all like star struck and confused and nervous about how we should address Cannonbal.\"should we say Mr adderly or mr cannonball or what?\"
he was just so great to us. we declined the offer to be snuck inside and we had to get to our gig anyway :-)
he is probably the only alto player i ever dug.. being a tenor player and all that. i still miss him. this is my first visit to this site. i just all of a sudden decided to \"google\' his name after hearing a tune of his on the local jazz station here in town tonight. im off to explore the stie in depth. thanks!

I have been a great fan of Cannonball\'s since getting my first album of his, basically by accident, 'Somethin' Else', in a set of four CDs that were Miles Davis' contribution to the Blue Note label. I thought it was wonderful, and now I have 18 of his albums, and he is one of my favourite jazz musicians. I have named my son, who's almost three, Julian after him. Thanks for the excellent website!

Cannonball Adderley was a great musician. He had an enormous impact on my life. With Miles Davis in the 1950s and also as a bandleader with his brother Nat Adderley. He created music that you always go back to. The album sleeves on their own are like old friends. It would have been great to meet him.

My Father came to Fort Lauderdale after Cannonball had long left. All we know of this great man of Jazz is what was in the press and a few friends that knew Cannonball at Dillard. I had the priviledge of meeting with a cousin of Julian and Nat Adderley a few years ago in South Carolina and we discovered that both of our families originated from the same Island in the Bahamas. I have listen to his Album Mercy Mercy over and over and I can feel the passion in the music. Too bad a lot of folks do not know of this great talent now days. I will go and check out the Old Dillard exhibit soon.

I signed this guest book about a year ago and my love for Cannonball's playing has grown all the more stronger. I was extremely excited when i found "Money in the Pocket" (while i was in Seattle Washington), a recording that was just released that Cannonball made in March 1966 at "The Club" in Chicago and this one was actually recorded live at "The Club". His vitality and charisma pour out of this CD and it is one of my new favourites. I am currently travelling the west coast of the USA and i strongly intend to visit 'The Jazz Workshop' in San Francisco and 'The Lighthouse' in Hermosa Beach California, just to stand in the place where these phenominal recordings were made will mean so much to me, because these were the recordings that made me start playing alto sax, and i will never stop.

Gilles, thanks for all you do to promote Cannonball's music. I am one of Cannon's greatest fans and have transcribed more of his solos than anyone in the world. You can get a little taste of them on my site www.docstewart.com. I will gradually release a series of books of Cannon's solo transcriptions organized by year and session date. My transcriptions are incredibly accurate and include articulations and phrasing (which takes as much time to deduce as transcribing the notes). Anyway, keep up the good work!

I'm a Brazilian jazz journalist since the mid-fifties and always was a huge fan of Cannonball Adderley. He was one of the most impressive altoists I heard in my life and appreciate all his records. His only Brazilian appearance was in 1972 with Nat Adderley, George Duke, Walter Booker and Roy McCurdy and was a great success.

My name is Christian McBride, and I'd like to thank you for celebrating the life and  music of Cannonball Adderley. Although I'm a bass player, Cannonball has touched me much deeper than any other musician. Between you and I, I hope to accomplish with my band as he did with his - to be very forward thinking and modern, but still listenable and very rooted in the blues. I've always felt that Cannonball has NEVER gotten the credit he deserves for being a modernist. Many jazz critics are so self- centered in what THEY think good jazz - and most of them think that abstract jazz is the
"thinking man's" music, and anything rooted in the blues (i.e. What Black people would like) is "elementary". And since Cannonball had many, many hits on the R&B charts in the 60's when no other PURE jazz musicians were quite as commercially successful, I believe the jazz critics wrote him off. I think they STILL do that. More so now than in the 60's, perhaps. Miles Davis gets so much credit for the advent of electric jazz, all those dumb-ass critics need to do is go back and listen to any Cannonball Adderley album (circa "the capitol years"), and they would plainly see that Cannonball was WAY, WAY ahead of Miles in the electric department.

Anyway, I thank you for your website. I wish you the best.

Coming from a heavy Elvis and Motown back ground and love of as a young boy. I remember feeling the first actual sensations of your mind and body really connecting and being taken for a wonderful ride musically. Cannonball was not just a supper turn on musically but also as a person, super guy. for me and I'm still finding things I haven't herd before.    the first time around 1961 and feeling so good because I really liked the music and it was real jazz. How about " Spectacular" Love the Man I remember Like yesterday that day in 1975 ,Seems impossible its 30 years

Paying my deepest respects for the LARGESSE that Cannonball left for us, in this world to enjoy and be praised for.  I grew up hearing Cannonball, and desperately tried to emulate his playing ability and expressions, as I too played alto sax throughout junior, and high schools, and into the US Army Band.  I wish I could have conveyed my deepest admiration to him, Nat, or other family members.  God Bless!!

Nice site. 'Cannon' was my introduction to jazz when I was 14 years old (in the early 60s). I still prefer his alto playing to anyone else (although Bobby Watson runs a close 2nd!). Great to see so many people showing an interest in 'the man'.

I think the picture of Cannonball's soprano is a marigaux  I don't  think I have the right spelling.  These horns were  brought into the U.S. by King.  The palm keys are different   than on the selmer mark 6.  I also have the leather neck  stap and indian head that he wore in the later years.  He  wore the laether strap for most of his career.  It was a gift  from his friend Lee Weaver.  It was given to me by Nat.  I  would love to send you a photo.  This web site is fantastic I called Ann Adderley(Nat's wife ) this week so she could  check it out.  All the best  Mike Smith

I am, primarily, looking for an old recording of Jerome Kern's "The Way You Look Tonight," which Adderley did on an album called "Cannonball En Route." However, since Parker there really have been only two alto players to get close one is Lee Konitz but for technical ability the Cannon is the best. To a certain extent we will never hear people like him again or for that matter Gillespie, Eldridge, Hawkins, Young, Webster and many more. The 20th Century was unique for jazz. I know that there are many good musicians around today but that fire and innovation seems to just miss. The saddest element of all this is that the Cannon died far too young just like Parker. These people are desperately needed today.

Cannon has been my strongest inspiration as a jazz musician.  I own almost all of his cd's, and I never cease to be mezmorized every time I hear him play.  He has given me so many musical ideas, and I try to emmulate his playing style.  There will never be another like him, and I think he was the greatest man to ever touch a saxophone.

So much confidence,  such execution, so many free ideas even before Ornette,  that optimism, it's incredible.

Coming across your web site for the very first time, I´ve been looking at its many bits and pieces for one and a half hours - listening to a live version of Sack O´Woe just now. Gilles, je te remercies for the extraordinary efforts you must have taken to represent the life and music of one of the greatest Jazz musicians ever. It was Kind of Blue that first made me aware of Cannonball, Nils Lundgren´s congenial Paint it Blue eventually made me have a closer look, and today, whenever I feel a little depressed, I listen to one of Cannonball´s live recordings and the warm-hearted tone of his voice introducing the next piece and his soulful play cheer me up again. So did your web site ...
Thank you, I´ll be back.
Greetings from Germany, Andreas
