ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tim Price-saxophonist, multi-woodwind player, composer, teacher, author, and music journalist~is a native of Reading, Pennsylvania. He holds a degree from the Berklee College of Music in Boston (1973 graduate). While at Berklee, he studied with Charlie Mariano, his main inspiration, as well as with Andy McGhee, Joe Viola, and Nick Ciazza. After Berklee he studied saxophone and improvisation with Sal Nistico, Fred Lipsius, Jimmy Lyons, Ray Pizzi, Sonny Stitt, and Ronnie Cuber; flute with Harold Jones; clarinet with Kal Opperman; bassoon with Karen Borca (with special guidance from Don Christlieb and Ray Pizzi); and classical and jazz piano with Jack Reilly and Charlie Banacos.

Tim has played professionally with the big bands of Jimmy Mosher and Paul Fontaine, TommyDorsey (under Murry McEachern and Buddy Morrow), Russ Morgan, Ralph Martrie, Harry James, and the Allentown Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Bob Bear. Smaller groups he played with include Don Patterson, Les De Merle, Cecil Payne, Bobby Durham, Hod O'Brien, George Young, Warren Chaisson, Cedric Jensen, Jack McDuff, Randy Sutton, Al Grey, Billy James, Arthur Harper, Mickey Roker, Ira Sullivan, Jack Reilly, Bill Doggett, Bobby Zankel, Milt Trenier, and Gary McFarland.

He's done clinics, workshops, and lectured at numerous schools in the East Coast area. He is also a product specialist for Dave Guardala saxophone products and has appeared in workshop concerts along with saxophonists Michael Brecker, Branford Marsalis, and Bill Evans. In 1993, he was awarded a jazz fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts for Jazz Performance.

Tim has been a feature writer for Saxophone Journal for a decade and a regular contributor to the magazine Jazz Player. His reviews and articles have also appeared in Windplayer and Ear Magazine. His liner notes can be found on recordings by Tab Smith, Ray Pizzi, Bert Wilson, and Jerry Bergonzi.

Tim has also written two other books that are published by Hal Leonard: Hot Rock Saxophone Techniques, and Great Tenor Sax Solos.

Tim Price is one of the pioneers of the jazz bassoon, and he plays all saxophones, flutes, clarinets, oboe, strich, and saxello. He resides in Reading, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Marcia. He teaches privately and performs throughout the East Coast, and is available for concerts, clinics, recordings, jazz festivals, residencies, and mini-residencies. Contact P.O.
